Dermot O’Rourke is accredited mediator with the Mediation Institute of Ireland. He has a post graduate diploma in Mediation and Conflict Resolution from National University of Ireland Maynooth.
Dermot is a solicitor by profession and qualified in 1979 and was the managing partner of O’Rourke Reid solicitors for many years retiring from practice in 2004. At that stage O’Rourke Reid had progressed from a one person solicitors firm to a staff of 150 with 27 solicitors based in Ireland and the UK.
Dermot throughout his years as a solicitor has extensive knowledge of litigation and until he specialised in commercial and corporate law in 1992 he was engaged extensively as a general practitioner in litigation involving disputes from corporate to family law and industrial relations. From 1992 to 2004 Dermot specialised in corporate and commercial property and sits on boards of companies where he gives the benefit of his legal experience and corporate governance knowledge (he has a diploma from University College of Dublin Smurfit, in Corporate Governance). A mediator by nature Dermot passionately believes in mediation as a preemptory move before anybody should contemplate expensive legal proceedings.
In addition to saving the parties involved in the conflict legal fees, it can also in many instances resolve the core issue that caused the problem in the first instance unlike litigation.
Dermot in addition to his vast experience in the commercial world, has acted as a sports mediator in conflicts in sporting bodies in Ireland and has also sat on tribunals involving sporting matters. In addition he mediates in London in commercial disputes.
