Pat Smyth

Pat Smyth mediator

As a mediator, Pat Smyth offers a totally impartial, non-judgemental, confidential process in a safe, neutral and non-threatening environment to enable the couple to discuss issues in an organised and constructive manner.

Mediation is a confidential and voluntary process in which a neutral third party, the mediator, helps you to constructively discuss and negotiate all issues surrounding your divorce or separation.

Pat has worked with small and large organisations, individuals, couples and families in facilitating and helping them resolve conflict.  He brings that experience into the mediation room to assist parties in resolving their disputes in various arenas including separating couples, workplace disputes, commercial, financial and community-based disputes.  He brings to the mediation process his listening and empathic skills in working with people and creates the right balance of allowing sufficient time for discussion while maintaining focus on the outcome, namely a written agreement that both parties can use to help them live their separate but at times overlapping lives into the future.

Pat specialises in helping couples who have decided to separate or divorce, or who have already separated, to negotiate their own terms of agreement, while addressing the needs and interests of all involved.  He encourages the separating couple to co-operate with each other in working out mutually acceptable decisions on the vitally important issues of parenting arrangements, living arrangements / family home, financial support and any other issues related to the separation. The many emotionally charged areas that arise can include;

  • Parenting plans / Childcare arrangements
  • Spousal & Child Maintenance
  • Division of Assets
  • Pensions and Insurances / Business Assets / Future Inheritance
  • Family Home / New living arrangements, including that of any children
  • Issues involving children including, Access, Custody and Guardianship
  • Issues surrounding the education and schooling of the children
  • Family holidays & special occasions

Pat’s work is informed by his knowledge of interpersonal and organisational dynamics, finance, management, contract law, company law, parenting, child protection frameworks, the mediation process and a solid understanding of the personal and shared impacts of conflict.
