Hugh McGovern

Dr. Hugh McGovern is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, and Chartered
Psychologist Specialising in Psychotherapy with The Psychological Society of
Ireland. He is also an Associate Fellow, and a Full Member of its Clinical and
Psychotherapy Divisions.

Hugh was employed in Dublin and the West for many years as a Clinical Psychologist, and Senior Clinical Psychologist in the Irish health service. He saw a wide range of patients in Adult and Older Adult Mental Health, Community Care, and Primary Care Services referred for psychological assessment, consultation, and psychotherapy.

Hugh has previously completed a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at Pacifica
Graduate Institute; a Master of Arts in Psychology at the University of West Georgia; and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Carleton University in Canada. He also did internships in a university counselling centre, community care centre, and men’s prison, and worked as a Psychometrist after completing internship requirements.

He also has a Diploma in Psychoanalysis from the C. G. Jung Institute Zurich in
Switzerland, and a Graduate Certificate in Neo-Jungian Studies and Contemporary
Analytical Psychology from Pacifica, both awarded in 2024.

Dr. McGovern has training and expertise in cognitive behavioural, person centred, and psychoanalytic approaches to psychotherapy and counselling, and draws on them in a way best suited to each client’s background, needs, and short- or long-term difficulties. He also has substantial clinical experience working with people who are experiencing depression, grief, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, self harming/suicidal thoughts, and many other mental health problems.

Hugh has training and expertise in working with dreams to help illuminate the nature of clients’ difficulties and what can be done to resolve them, and improve their health and wellbeing. He also gives lectures based on his diploma thesis on C. G. Jung, W.B. Yeats, and the Anima Mundi, and how this relates to environmental destruction and climate change.
